Tips of Writing a Good Essay


The word Essay means ‘An Attempt’. All of us face the problem of writing a good and effective essay. Writing an effective essay doesn’t involve any magic, it simply the art and skill of the writer to justify the topic and write the essay after giving a serious thought to it. There is no foolproof methodology as to how one can write an effective essay but here are some useful guidelines that might definitely help you in composing a better essay:

1. Organize your essay: Organization is essential, as it ensures that the ideas are expressed accurately so that the readers react positively to your opinions and thoughts. Proper arrangement of ideas reduces reading time.

2. It must be clear, concise and readable: An essay must be a unity. In other words, an essay must express one theme with a definite purpose. Anything irrelevant should not be admitted to the essay.

3. It must have a logical order: An essay should be written in a logical order of thoughts where the relationship among the ideas expressed must be easier to distinguish and remember. Ideas may be abstract or real, descriptive or a narration of a series of events etc.

4. Give it an attractive introduction: The first sentence is likely to attract attention. Avoid using monotonous and common introductory lines. It is very important to arouse readers’ interest right from the beginning.

5. Style of writing: The language must be simple, direct and natural. Difficult words and unnecessary repetition should be strictly avoided. The ideas expressed must not be vague. They should be expressed with certain degree of certainty and reliability.

6. Content of Essay: You must always bear in your mind that each essay is unique. An indirect approach to the unpleasant opinions and a direct approach to pleasant and receptive ideas is the best approach to essay writing. Writers usually gain thoughts from short and simple examples from everyday life of the readers, and when the daily experiences are narrated in the form of an essay it makes a lasting impression on the minds of the readers.

7. Personal Touch of the writer: The content must be such that the writer’s feelings and opinions are revealed from the essay. Alternatively, it may even provide information on a given subject or details of any description.

8. Positive response of the reader: Ideas when properly arranged puts the reader in a pleasant state of mind, rendering them receptive to the further information that follow. Present your ideas in such a way such that the readers shall perceive them in a fair and logical manner.

9. Focused and to the point: Wait for a while and think about the central idea of the message that you need to convey through your essay and then pen down your opinions and thoughts. Delaying the main point would certainly cause confusion and frustration. Ultimately, readers lose their interest.

10. Avoid clichés that are insincere and meaningless.

Last but more importantly, the conclusion should be short and precise that should bring a unifying quality to the whole essay. Avoid misunderstandings with your readers to enhance their confidence in you. Conclude your essay leaving a strong influence on the readers’ mind.
